The cost of the two-person YouTube Premium plan is set at Rs 219 per month in India.

YouTube is embarking on an exciting initiative to enhance the accessibility of its Premium and Music Premium subscriptions. By introducing a two-person sharing plan, the platform aims to make these services more affordable for users. This new pricing structure is currently undergoing testing in select countries, including India, France, Taiwan, and Hong Kong, as reported by Moneycontrol.

Under this new plan, the monthly cost for YouTube Premium is Rs 219 in India, while the Music Premium version is attractively priced at Rs 149 during the trial period. This shared plan is a significant shift aimed at attracting more subscribers by offering a budget-friendly option for users who may not want to pay for an individual plan.

To qualify for this two-person subscription, it’s essential to note that both users must be at least 13 years old, possess their own Google accounts, and belong to the same Google family group. This requirement establishes a level of cohesion among users that could contribute to a more personalized viewing experience.

In related news, YouTube CEO Neal Mohan has recently announced a substantial Rs 850 crore investment to strengthen the Indian creator economy, further underlining YouTube’s commitment to developing the platform and its community.

A YouTube spokesperson emphasized the intention behind this new offering: “We’re experimenting with new ways to provide greater flexibility and value to our YouTube Premium subscribers, including offering a two-person Premium plan option, allowing two people to share a subscription at a reduced cost.” This sentiment echoes the company’s focus on enhancing subscriber satisfaction through value-oriented initiatives.

YouTube Premium comes equipped with numerous benefits designed to enhance the user experience. Subscribers enjoy ad-free viewing, the ability to listen to content in the background, offline video downloads, and early access to new experimental features. Conversely, Music Premium offers similar conveniences, albeit specifically tailored for music-related content.

In India, the individual YouTube Premium plan is available for Rs 149 monthly, while students can access a specially priced plan at Rs 89. Family plans, which permit multiple users, are offered at Rs 299. For those interested in music streaming, Music Premium plans are slightly lower, starting at Rs 59 for students, Rs 119 for individual users, and Rs 179 for families. The newly introduced two-person option efficiently bridges the gap between the more affordable individual and family plans, creating a tier that caters to users who wish to share but do not require a full family plan.

Google has increasingly concentrated on expanding YouTube’s subscription revenue in recent years. The company has taken robust action against ad blockers and raised Premium prices in several regions, including a noteworthy price increase in India, where rates had risen by 12% to 58% in August 2024. This reflects a broader trend of monetization in platforms that provide digital content, echoing the industry’s need for sustainable revenue models in a competitive landscape.
