This month’s extended security update for Windows 10 has caused issues with Message Queuing (MSMQ), a tool commonly utilized by enterprises for handling background tasks.
Microsoft reports that it has found a solution and is currently rolling out an out-of-band update (KB5074976) through the Update Catalog to resolve the issue.
This out-of-band update will not appear on Windows Update or WSUS; it is exclusively available via the Update Catalog. If you’re experiencing problems, it’s advisable to download this update directly.
After the Windows updates released on December 9, 2025, multiple users reported issues related to the functionality of Message Queuing (MSMQ).
The problems likely stem from changes Microsoft implemented in the security features concerning MSMQ, which inadvertently disrupted its performance.
According to Microsoft, users may encounter inactive message queues, alerts about low resources, application failures in writing to message queues, error messages about creating messages, and notifications about insufficient disk space or memory.
Testing by Microsoft confirmed that the issue also affects clustered MSMQ environments when under load.
The company emphasized that personal users with Windows Home or Pro editions are unlikely to face this problem.
“This issue predominantly impacts enterprise or managed IT setups,” the company stated.
Only PCs enrolled in Windows 10 ESU experiencing issues are expected to download the out-of-band update.
