Google is reportedly working on an exciting new feature akin to Samsung DeX, known as Android Desktop Mode. This innovative functionality aims to transform compatible smartphones into desktop-like devices when they are connected to an external display. Initially slated for launch with Android 16, it is still in development and is expected to be unveiled next year with the arrival of the new Pixel smartphones. This feature will reportedly include resizable application windows, a desktop-style taskbar, and enhanced multitasking capabilities.
For those unfamiliar, existing features such as Samsung DeX and Motorola Connect already provide users with options to create a desktop-like interface and access multiple applications simultaneously. Users can control their devices using a mouse and keyboard, enhancing productivity and streamlining their workflow.
During a recent live broadcast on X (previously Twitter), tech journalist Mishaal Rahman revealed that Android will undergo a significant user interface transformation along with the introduction of a desktop mode. This development has also been corroborated by Android Authority. Reports indicate that a new toggle labeled “enable desktop experience features” has been discovered on various Pixel devices. Once activated, this feature is designed to provide a desktop-style interface when the phone is connected to a laptop or monitor via USB Type-C. This will include a taskbar and status bar, granting users easy access to essential navigation options.
The anticipated Android Desktop Mode is expected to grant users the ability to utilize multiple applications within floating windows. Additionally, it would allow users to navigate between windows effortlessly, as well as resize or snap them to the side for improved multitasking capabilities. This evolution in Android’s interface aims to enhance user productivity and offer a seamless transition between mobile and desktop experiences.
In related news, further reports suggest that there are upcoming improvements for other devices, such as the Samsung Galaxy S25 FE, which may receive minor camera enhancements and performance upgrades over its predecessor, the Galaxy S24 FE.
While there was initial speculation that Google would introduce the Android Desktop mode with the rollout of Android 16, Rahman clarified that its launch may be delayed. The tech giant is seemingly taking the time needed to refine the interface, with plans to launch this feature in conjunction with Android 17 on the next-generation Pixel additions. This indicates Google’s commitment to delivering a polished and user-friendly experience.
As of now, Google has not officially confirmed the details regarding the Android Desktop mode, leading to both anticipation and speculation among tech enthusiasts and users alike.
