ToggleMicrosoft has unveiled a fresh approach to the Start menu in Windows 11, introducing a new customisable design paired with an option to disable the recommended feed feature for files and applications. This revamped Start menu is set to roll out to Windows Insiders by the end of this month, aligning with the company’s commitment to enhancing the user experience on its operating systems.
In a recent blog post, Microsoft provided an in-depth look at the design journey leading to this update. The company shared insights from five early design prototypes, which showcased various concepts, including a rounded Start menu packed with widget functionality, a “For You” section featuring personalized recommendations such as upcoming Teams meetings, YouTube videos, and files that users have recently accessed. According to the blog, the design team undertook extensive testing to evaluate a wide variety of layouts. This thorough process involved eye-tracking studies, scroll analysis, and detailed feedback from more than 300 enthusiastic Windows 11 users. After rigorous testing and refinement, the current design was finalized, reflecting a blend of user preferences and functional innovation.
The updated Start menu not only features a more expansive layout but also empowers users with the option to hide the recommended feed entirely, enhancing its customizability. While it retains the traditional app list that users have come to know and love, it now integrates a companion panel designed to provide quick access to recent phone calls, messages, and files, especially beneficial for users who have connected Android devices.
