ToggleThe Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has recently made a significant announcement related to SIM card validity for telecom users. These new guidelines increase the duration of SIM card validity, providing essential relief to individuals who tend to forget to recharge their secondary SIM cards. The initiative is aimed at reducing the frequency with which users need to recharge their SIMs. In contrast to previous regulations, the new rules extend the length of time that SIM cards can stay active without requiring additional recharges. Below is a detailed overview of the various telecom operators and the updated validity terms applicable to each.
If you hold an Airtel SIM, you will now enjoy the benefit of maintaining your card’s validity for over 90 days without any recharge activity. After this period, there is a 15-day grace period during which you must reactivate your number. Failing to do so within this timeframe will result in the number getting deactivated and subsequently reassigned to another user.
For Jio SIM card users, the validity period has now been extended to 90 days without the need for a recharge. It’s important to note that during this validity interval, the availability of incoming calls can vary based on your last recharge plan. Should your SIM remain inactive for more than 90 days, you will need to enroll in a reactivation plan. Otherwise, the SIM will be permanently disconnected and will be reassigned to a new user.
Vi (Vodafone Idea) users will also benefit from a 90-day non-recharge period. Following this grace period, a minimum recharge of Rs 49 will be necessary to keep the SIM operational.

Among all the operators, BSNL stands out by offering the longest validity period for its users. Their inactive SIM cards can remain valid for up to 180 days, making BSNL an appealing choice for users who wish to avoid the hassle of frequent recharges.
If a SIM card remains inactive for more than 90 days yet has a prepaid balance ranging from Rs 20 to Rs 30, the existing balance will be used to automatically extend the activation by an additional 30 days. However, if a SIM card does not have enough balance during this time, it will be deactivated and subsequently made available for new users.
