What is D2M technology and how does it work?

Direct-to-Mobile (D2M) technology represents a revolutionary advancement in broadcasting, aiming to reshape how consumers engage with various content and data. Utilizing terrestrial TV signals, D2M enables the transmission of live television broadcasts, videos, audio streams, and text messages directly to mobile devices without requiring Wi-Fi or internet access. This groundbreaking capability means users will have the freedom to enjoy popular platforms like YouTube and Netflix, as well as access essential text messages and other digital services without the constraints of a traditional internet connection.

The technology functions in a manner somewhat akin to FM radio systems found in vehicles and mobile phones, providing users with a seamless experience for both audio and video content.

In India, the government has undertaken preliminary testing of D2M technology across 19 major cities, including metropolitan hubs like Delhi, Bengaluru, and Noida. Full-scale testing is set to commence in the near future, though specific dates are yet to be confirmed. As anticipation builds around the launch of D2M-enabled devices, it is clear that this technology could herald a new chapter in mobile communications, opening doors to previously untapped potential in content delivery and consumer engagement.
