ToggleThe government has issued a crucial alert regarding the escalating misinformation proliferating on social media, specifically cautioning citizens against propaganda linked to Pakistan. The Press Information Bureau (PIB) Fact Check, which serves as the official fact-checking division of the government, has posted vital information, urging the public to exercise heightened vigilance while navigating online information.
In today’s digital age, social media platforms such as Facebook, WhatsApp, Twitter, and Instagram have become major sources of news. However, the prevalence of fake posts often camouflaged as genuine news is a growing concern, especially during sensitive political contexts. As indicated by the PIB, there is an expectation of increased propaganda efforts designed to sway public opinion, particularly regarding issues surrounding national security in the near future.
“In the coming days, your social media feeds may be inundated with #Pakistan sponsored propaganda. It is essential to scrutinize each piece of information you encounter carefully. Should you come across dubious content—especially relating to the Indian Armed Forces or any pertinent information—please report it to #PIBFactCheck,” the PIB posted on their X (formerly Twitter) account.
For anyone discovering potentially dubious content, the PIB encourages prompt reporting via WhatsApp at +91 8799711259 or through email at factcheck@pib.gov.in.

This advisory arrives at a critical juncture of heightened military tension between India and Pakistan. Recently, India retaliated to the Pahalgam terror attack, which took the lives of 26 civilians, by executing missile strikes on terrorist hideouts within Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK).

Under such tense circumstances, it is imperative for individuals to remain well-informed, critically assess any information they come across online, and utilize robust measures to verify its authenticity. The warning from PIB highlights the need for responsible social media practices, especially given the rising tide of political and military tensions in the region.
