KEY POINTS

Android 15 mandates a minimum of 32GB internal storage, a rise from the previous 16GB standard.

Devices with less than 4GB RAM will be required to use Android Go Edition.

Compatibility with Vulkan 1.3 graphics API and emergency contact sharing capabilities is essential for devices.

Recent reports indicate that Google is fortifying the hardware requirements for Android devices. A detailed overview by Android Authority reveals that Android 15 stipulates a baseline of 32GB internal storage for devices wishing to operate on the latest platform. This marks a significant increase from the previous bar of 16GB established during Android 14’s rollout.

Technical insights suggest that devices with only 16GB of storage frequently encounter difficulties, as the Android operating system itself occupies substantial storage space, leaving minimal capacity for applications, media files, important documents, or necessary updates. This limitation can lead to numerous issues for end users. By raising the storage baseline to 32GB, Google aims to facilitate smoother operations for budget-friendly Android devices, according to the report.

Interestingly, Google can’t fully prevent manufacturers from opting for lower storage volumes if they decide to utilize an open-source variant of Android. However, if these manufacturers wish to incorporate Google services, such as the Play Store or YouTube, they must secure a Google Mobile Services (GMS) license. The newly introduced stipulations will apply to devices that adhere to this licensing agreement.

In addition, the minimum RAM requirement for standard Android devices has now been established at 4GB. Phones that do not meet this memory requirement will have to rely on Android Go, a streamlined version of Android tailored for devices with limited resources. Furthermore, devices operating on Android 15 will need to be equipped with processors that support Vulkan 1.3 or newer versions as this technology enhances graphics performance for gaming and other applications.

Updated Requirements for Android 15:

1. Minimum of 32GB internal storage (with at least 75% of this space available for user apps and data).

2. Devices with 2GB or 3GB RAM must use optimized memory management techniques, such as those found in Android Go.

3. Compatibility with Vulkan 1.3 graphics API and ANGLE libraries is required to ensure that older applications function efficiently.

4. Devices must feature emergency contact sharing capabilities during emergency calls (provided that user consent is secured).

It is noteworthy that these amendments are designed to uplift performance standards, enhance security protocols, and guarantee that Android devices can cope with the increasing demands of contemporary applications. As mobile gaming and AI functionalities proliferate, these requirements are essential in providing a robust and user-friendly experience for all Android users.
