ToggleThe current rise in tensions between India and Pakistan has led to a viral advisory circulating among citizens, prompting alarm and confusion. The advisory urges people to turn off their mobile device location services, claiming that drones are being used to monitor high population density areas. However, the government has swiftly confirmed that this advisory is unequivocally fake.
To clarify the situation, the Press Information Bureau (PIB) Fact Check took to X (formerly Twitter) to dispel the rumors. In a clear and direct post, PIB stated: “A viral image is claiming that an advisory has been issued, advising people to turn off location services on their phones immediately. #PIBFactCheck” The message continues, “This claim is FAKE. No such advisory has been issued by the Government of India.”
The misleading message that has spread widely reads: “Hello everyone, We have received an official email from the faculty with an important advisory: please turn off the location services on your phone immediately. It has been brought to our attention that drones are being used to detect areas with high population.”

The recent events at the border have heightened concern among citizens, leading many to believe the advisory without verifying its authenticity. The government laments the spread of misinformation and urges the public to remain vigilant against such rumors.
Earlier this week, officials had already issued warnings regarding a surge in misinformation linked to Pakistan. They emphasized that misleading social media posts are likely to proliferate in the coming days as part of a “Pakistan sponsored propaganda.” The government noted, “In the coming days, your social media will be inundated with #Pakistan sponsored propaganda. It’s essential to scrutinize every piece of information carefully. If you encounter dubious content, particularly concerning the Indian Armed Forces or events related to the current situation, report it to #PIBFactCheck.”
If any suspicious content surfaces, users are encouraged to report it directly. They can do so via WhatsApp at +91 8799711259 or by emailing factcheck@pib.gov.in.
Citizens are reminded to stay calm, refrain from sharing unverified information, and rely solely on official government channels for the latest updates. Ensuring that accurate information prevails is crucial, especially in these sensitive times.
