Similarly, Vlaardingerbroek shared a screenshot of the alert she received from Apple on X (formerly Twitter), explicitly indicating a “targeted mercenary spyware attack” present on her device.

Apple has a history of notifying iPhone users when it detects a potential spyware menace. The company clarifies that such attacks generally focus on a select group of individuals, including journalists, activists, politicians, and diplomats, who are often at a heightened risk of being targeted. Since 2021, Apple has been sending these threat notifications multiple times each year, with a total of 150 countries having received them at this point. Yet, Apple has not revealed the origins of these attacks, leaving users in a state of uncertainty regarding the threat landscape.
